Álvaro Catalán de Ocón (Spain, 1975) is an award-winning designer at the helm of the Madrid-based production and distribution firm ACdO, from where he launches his most radical projects. Multiculturalism, craftsmanship, and sustainability are at the core of Álvaro’s designs, creating a work ethic that produces attractive and functional objects, while sparking debate on environmental issues, among other themes.

After completing his Business Management studies at Madrid Complutense University, Alvaro began his training in product design at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan and later graduated with honors from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. In 2004 he started up his own studio in Barcelona where he designed the LA FLACA lamp, winner of the Design Plus  Award (Frankfurt) and nominated to the DELTA Awards in Barcelona. In 2009 he moved his studio to Madrid  where he also teaches at the Istituto Europeo di Design and is a member of DIMAD Executive Board.

In 2007 and 2010 his designs were exhibited in the Salone Satellite di Milano and are winners of the Design  Report Award of this last edition. Since then, he shows every year his new projects at Spazio Rossana Orlandi  Milano.

During 2011 and 2012 he conceived and developed the PET Lamp Project, which has been a growing success since its presentation at Rosanna Orlandi in 2013. This has enabled him to create later on ACdO S.L. the self-production design edition brand of his studio. PET Lamp has already developed several collections in Colombia,  Chile, Japan, Ethiopia, Australia, Thailand and Ghana. This project and the Studio Alvaro Catalán de Ocón has been backed up by several prizes and nominations such as: Best Product Designer of the year by IED Awards  2019, Finalist of the Dezeen Awards 2019 for the best Design Studio, the AD prize for the Best Emerging Design  Studio 2014, nomination for the London Design Museum as best product of the year 2014, CODESPA for best  PYME Solidaria, Silver Delta Award 2014 in Barcelona, 4th Ibero American Biennial of Design (BID_14) Design  for Development Award, nomination for the German Design Award 2015 and finalist at Ecoembes R Awards,  for Best Innovation and Entrepreneurship Project, among others.

His work is part of the design collections at Centre George Pompidou and Centre National des Arts Plastiques in Paris, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, M+ West Kowloon Museum in Hong Kong and the  Denver Art Museum. His designs have been exhibited in internationally renowned galleries such as Spazio  Rossana Orlandi (Milan), MINT Gallery (London), the Spanish Machado-Muñoz and has been part of different exhibitions at VitraHaus (Bassel), the London Design Museum, Issey Miyake Foundation 21_21 Design Sight  (Tokyo), BAUHAUS (Dessau), Museum of Art and Design (New York), La Sala Vinçon (Barcelona) and Trans  Design (Shanghai), among others.

Currently, he combines his work as consultant to different companies with the self-production of some of his designs, such as Home/Office, PET Lamp, Rayuela, Riad, Cornucopia, Candil, La Flaca, Ceramics Cu y Plinto.

In 2023, Catalán de Ocón won the 2023 Spanish National Design Award, which is granted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation. This award endorses the trajectory of Catalan de Ocon, who works from the periphery of design, conceiving iconic projects such as PET Lamp. “With a presence on five continents, in five of the most relevant museums in the world, and truly iconic products such as the PET lamp, through a sincere dialogue based on intercultural respect and the mixing of disciplines, materials, techniques and affections, Catalán de Ocón has successfully achieved, from his studio in Carabanchel outside the conventional industrial system, to send a powerful message to the world of design and emphasize the importance of collaboration, mutual protection, sustainability and twinning between cultures,” the jury’s mentioned in its statement.
