Over the last 45 years, Hedi Kyle has been inventing new book structures. Through her innovative use of the fold and her love of playing with paper, she has revolutionized the field of book arts, teaching in workshops around the globe and, for 25 years, at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In their new book, The Art of the Fold, Hedi and her daughter, artist and architect Ulla Warchol, gathered together in one volume 38 of Hedi’s most popular structures, including the Flag Book, the Blizzard Book, and the Fishbone Fold. Presented in the Project Space at ArtYard are a number of Hedi’s “thinking models” and drawings that contributed to the making of the book, as well as some of her more finished structures.
We encourage you to handle the structures on the model table, and to imagine what is possible with minimal use of adhesives or sewing—just paper and the mighty fold!
