Legacy giving offers a meaningful way to support ArtYard’s future while aligning with your long-term financial and estate plans.
Legacy gifts can take many forms, each with distinct advantages depending on your goals and circumstances. Whether through a simple bequest or a more structured approach, legacy giving allows you to extend your support beyond the present moment, helping to ensure that ArtYard’s work with artists and community continues for years to come.
There are several ways to include ArtYard in your plans, outlined below.
If you are considering a legacy gift or would like to discuss options, we would be glad to speak with you. Please contact Nina Brander at (908) 996-5018 or [email protected].
Bequests allow you to leave money to ArtYard in your will while maintaining the flexibility to update it as your circumstances change.
You can name ArtYard in your will or trust in a variety of ways:
- Donate a fixed dollar amount
- Donate specific property (such as stock)
- Donate a percentage of your estate
- Donate all or a specified portion of the residue of your estate (the assets that remain after specific bequests have been fulfilled)
- Name ArtYard as a contingent beneficiary (to receive assets in the event that a specific named beneficiary should predecease you)
Benefits of Bequests:
- You can retain control over your assets during your lifetime
- You can modify your bequest if circumstances change
- You can direct your bequest to a particular purpose (please speak with our Development Office first, to ensure that your gift is structured to accomplish your wishes and objectives)
- Your gift will help ensure ArtYard’s future

Have you already designated a gift in your will or trust to ArtYard? Please let us know by contacting Nina Brander at (908) 996-5018 or [email protected].
You can designate ArtYard to receive all or part of the proceeds of an IRA or other retirement plan after your lifetime. As a nonprofit, ArtYard will receive the full amount, exempt from income and estate taxes that would otherwise fall to an heir/child if listed as the designated beneficiary.
To list ArtYard as a beneficiary of your retirement account, please contact your investment services provider for a Change-of-Beneficiary form, or download one from your provider’s website.
You can designate ArtYard to receive all or part of the proceeds of your IRA or other retirement plan after your lifetime. Explore options to give during and after your lifetime below.
Supporters who are 70.5 years old or older with a traditional IRA are eligible to make a potential tax-free donation to ArtYard from their IRAs. These gifts are tax-free, regardless of whether you itemize deductions on your tax return. If you are 73 years old or older, these gifts can even count towards fulfilling your Required Minimum Distribution for the calendar year. To learn more, contact your plan administrator.
Having a valid will in place may not be enough. Assets like IRAs, 401(k)s, pensions, life insurance policies, and more are called “non-probate” assets and must be planned for separately. To learn more, contact your plan administrator.
Benefits of designating your retirement account:
- You retain control over plan assets during your lifetime
- You can change the beneficiary if circumstances change
- By naming ArtYard as a designated beneficiary, the proceeds of your retirement plan will go directly to ArtYard, exempt from income and estate taxes
- Your gift will help ensure ArtYard’s future
Retirement accounts are not the only accounts that need beneficiaries. You can list ArtYard as the beneficiary of any asset, such as a savings account or donor advised fund. This will allow you to reserve these assets for use in your lifetime as you need them, and ArtYard will inherit only what you don’t need. Contact your provider to designate ArtYard.
Just like the last two beneficiaries, ArtYard can be named as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. You could name us as the primary beneficiary, co-beneficiary (we would share the proceeds with others you have named), or the contingent beneficiary (ArtYard would receive the proceeds only if your primary beneficiary predeceases you).
If you own a fully paid-up life insurance policy with cash value, you can donate that policy to ArtYard during your lifetime, making ArtYard the owner and irrevocable beneficiary of the policy. By making this gift you may be entitled to an income tax deduction in the year of the gift.
If you are over 70.5 years old, you can give any amount (up to a maximum of $100,000) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as ArtYard without having to pay income taxes on the money. You might see this popular tax-free donation referred to as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD.
To make a qualified charitable distribution, contact Nina Brander at (908) 996-5018 or [email protected].
These gifts are tax-free, regardless of whether you itemize deductions on your tax return. If you are 73 or older, these gifts can even count towards fulfilling your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the calendar year.
Many donors prefer to make gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or exchange traded funds because it can have a large impact on ArtYard’s mission and maximize potential tax benefits. To make a gift of stock, contact Nina Brander at (908) 996-5018 or [email protected].
