This December, ArtYard welcomes Gibney Company and legendary choreographer Lucinda Childs to Frenchtown for a technical residency developing Another Look, a major new work set to music by Philip Glass. Ahead of the work’s world premiere at New York City Center January 14–16, 2027, Gibney dancers will spend a week at ArtYard refining the choreography and technical elements, with an open rehearsal offering audiences a rare opportunity to witness the creative process firsthand.
Nearly 50 years after Childs and Glass collaborated on Einstein on the Beach, Childs returns to music from that era for this new work, set to Glass’s Another Look at Harmony, Part 4. The residency is part of Childs’ five-year creative partnership with Gibney Company.
The residency brings to ArtYard 12 Gibney Company dancers and guest artists, lighting designer Burke Brown, costume designer Karen Young, technical team members, and Company leadership Bridget Caston, Gilbert T. Small II, and Gina Gibney. During the residency, they will refine the work and prepare its technical elements ahead of the New York premiere, culminating in an open rehearsal that gives the community a chance to see the artists at work and hear directly from Childs and Gibney Artistic Director Gina Gibney.
The open rehearsal for Gibney Company’s Another Look will be at 6 PM on Thursday, Dec. 17 at ArtYard.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Lucinda Childs and Gibney Company to ArtYard at such an important moment in the life of this work,” said Jill Kearney, ArtYard Co-Founder and Executive Director. “One of the great privileges of being an arts center is getting to witness what happens before a work is finished — to see artists test ideas, make discoveries, and shape something that didn’t exist before. We’re excited to give our community a window into that process and to share in this extraordinary convergence of choreography, music, and American artistic history.”
A new work rooted in American minimalism
Another Look is part of Childs’ five-year creative partnership with Gibney Company, which began in 2026. The work is set to Philip Glass’s Another Look at Harmony, Part 4, a composition from the 1970s that has rarely been performed in its entirety and has never before been choreographed at this scale. Childs first encountered the score in New York in the 1970s, around the time Glass was composing Einstein on the Beach, the groundbreaking opera created with director Robert Wilson. Childs was featured in the original 1976 production and received an Obie Award for her work.
Nearly five decades later, Another Look brings Childs’ rigorous, highly musical choreography into dialogue with the precision and scale of Gibney Company. The work is being created to celebrate Glass’s 90th birthday.
The world premiere will feature live music by the French vocal ensemble Les Métaboles, conducted by Léo Warynski, with Yoan Héreau on organ. At ArtYard, the company will work with a recorded version of the music as they prepare the production.
“Another Look brings together Lucinda Childs’ extraordinary choreographic language with the artistry and precision of Gibney Company, while opening a new chapter in her decades-long artistic relationship with Philip Glass,” said Gina Gibney, Artistic Director of Gibney. “This residency at ArtYard comes at an important moment in the creation of the work, as we move toward its world premiere. We’re grateful for the opportunity to spend this time in Frenchtown, and especially to share a glimpse of that process with the ArtYard community.”
An opportunity to encounter the work in process
During the ArtYard residency, Childs and Gibney Company will share their process with the local community through the open rehearsal and other engagements. Before the open rehearsal, Childs and Gibney will be joined onstage for a conversation about the new work, its development, and the collaboration between choreographer, dancers, and music.
The December residency continues ArtYard’s role as a place for artists to develop new work while inviting the community into the creative process.
