The Deep

The Deep is a participatory art project that invites community members to build a shared ocean — one handcrafted wave at a time. Inspired by Bill Viola’s The Raft, the project explores how individual experiences can converge into a collective, powerful force. In Viola’s installation, a group of strangers stand at a bus stop, lost in isolated reveries, when walls of water crash into them, transforming them into a vulnerable, communal whole.

In the lead-up to ArtYard’s Aqualumina Festival, Mudtown Ceramics will host workshops for participants to create porcelain waves to contribute to this growing ceramic ocean. The assembled work will come together on a large table in ArtYard’s entrance gallery, forming a sea shaped by many makers. After the exhibition ends, participants will reclaim their individual waves to take home.
