Suleika Jaouad is the author of the instant New York Times bestselling memoir, Between Two Kingdoms, which has been translated into over 20 languages and was named one of the best books of 2021 by The New York Times, The Washington Post, and others. At age 22, Jaouad documented her experience of cancer in young adulthood in the Emmy Award-winning New York Times column and video series “Life, Interrupted.” Her essays and reporting have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, The Guardian, and Vogue, among others.

After a leukemia recurrence in 2022, treatment temporarily compromised her vision, hindering Jaouad’s ability to write. In the throes of literal fever dreams and hallucinations, Jaouad turned to watercolors —producing a vibrant, visceral record and visual rhetoric of grief and desire while confined to her hospital bed. Her creative pursuits have since expanded to include painting as an extension of her writing practice.

Jaouad is also the creator of the Isolation Journals, a weekly newsletter that was founded at the beginning of the pandemic to help people transform life’s interruptions into creative grist and community; it has over 160,000 subscribers from around the world and is one of the most popular publications on Substack. Along with husband Jon Batiste, she is the subject of the Oscar-nominated Netflix documentary, American Symphony, a portrait of two artists during a year of extreme highs and lows.

A vocal advocate for prison and healthcare reform, Jaouad served on Barack Obama’s Presidential Cancer Panel and received the inaugural Inspire Award from NMDP (formerly Be the Match) for her work to expand and diversify the national bone marrow registry. A highly sought-after speaker, she travels the world teaching workshops and inspiring audiences with her keynotes. Her mainstage TED Talk was one of the ten most popular of 2019 and has nearly five million views.

Born in New York City to a Tunisian father and a Swiss mother, Jaouad earned her BA with highest honors from Princeton University and an MFA in writing and literature from Bennington College.

Jaouad is currently at work on two forthcoming books from Random House, and her paintings will be the focus of several upcoming exhibitions. For more information on Suleika Jaouad, please subscribe to her weekly newsletter, and visit her on Instagram and at suleikajaouad.com.
