With over 30 years in the film industry and expertise in the marketing, distribution, sales, and acquisitions areas, Steven Raphael has been passionately devoted to bringing quality films from all over the world to the US marketplace.
Through his company required viewing — a full service film marketing, distribution, and consulting agency specializing in U.S. theatrical and ancillary marketing strategies for narrative, foreign language, and documentary films — he has strategized and implemented campaigns for hundreds of films which have garnered numerous awards including, Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Film Independent Spirit Awards, Gotham Awards, as well as the top prizes at acclaimed International film festivals including at Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, Venice, Telluride, and Sundance Film festivals. He has worked with some of the world’s most acclaimed filmmakers including Todd Haynes, Mira Nair, Jane Campion, Steven Soderbergh, Pablo Larrain, Pedro Alomodovar, Xavier Dolan, Wong Kar Wai, Celine Sciamma, The Coen Brothers, Robert Altman, Lucrecia Martel, Sebatian Lelio, The Dardenne Brothers, and most recently with Joachim Trier and Jonas Rasmussen.
Prior to founding required viewing, Raphael was Senior Vice president of Acquisitions and Co-productions at USA Films /Focus Features) and Senior Vice President of Publicity and Marketing at Gramercy Pictures/PolyGram and Senior Vice president of Acquisitions and Co-productions.
He is a member of The of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Public Relations branch) and he sits on the International Film Committee. He has been an Adjunct Professor of Film Marketing, at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and Stern School of Business, New York and he is a past board member of the Film Independent (FIND), OUTFEST and NEWFEST and has served as a member of IFP’s advisory committee. He sits on the board of CBST – the largest Gay and Lesbian Synagogue in the world. He is a graduate of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.
He lives in NYC with his husband and their cavapoo Ruthie.
