Peter English is a director, producer, and composer based in Philadelphia. He is relentless in his drive to turn surprising and innovative ideas into reality.
Peter’s compositional work pushes at the boundaries where music, technology, and interactivity collide. In 2017, he collaborated with engineers at Drexel University to create Drumhenge, a new musical instrument that uses electromagnets to transform an array of networked drums into a spatially distributed synthesizer. In 2018, he collaborated with a machine learning algorithm to create a generative score for Frankenstein AI, an immersive experience that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2019, he scored and served as technical director for Where There’s Smoke, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
As a filmmaker his oeuvre is vibrant — full of memorable characters and exuberant craft. Never one to shy away from complex topics, his work is layered and often ridiculous, blending high brow with low, custom prosthetics and slick graphics. He edited Alex Da Corte’s ROY G BIV, a 60-minute art film that premiered at the 2022 Whitney Biennial. His work has been nominated for Best Documentary Series at the Vimeo Film Festival in 2012, received praise from Pitchfork, NPR, and Sterogum, and earned him a coveted Vimeo Staff Pick.
